Event Navigation

On Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at 10:00AM the 1818 Society World Bank History Thematic Group, the World Bank Group Archives, and the World Bank Group Library will sponsor a book discussion with Dr. Ashoka Mody, the Charles and Marie Robertson visiting professor in international economic policy and lecturer in public and international affairs at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs and a World Bank alumnus.

Professor Mody will discuss his new book, India is Broken: A People Betrayed, Independence to Today, a provocative new account of how India moved relentlessly from its hope-filled founding in 1947 to the dramatic economic and democratic breakdowns of today. Combining statistical data with creative media, such as literature and cinema, to create strong, accessible, people-driven narratives, India is Broken is a meditation on the interplay between democracy and economic progress, with lessons extending far beyond India. Mody proposes a path forward that is fraught with its own peril, but which nevertheless offers something resembling hope. In selecting India is Broken as among the best summer books on economics for 2023, Martin Wolf, Chief Economics Commentator for the Financial Times writes that “Mody’s moral and intellectual courage is extraordinary.”

A Q&A session will follow Professor Mody’s discussion.
His book can be ordered from Amazon:
