Sponsored by the 1818 Society Transport Thematic Group

Transportation systems in developed and developing countries are receiving increasing attention from researchers and policymakers because improvements in those systems can spur a nation’s growth and raise its standard of living. At the same time, a transportation system’s safety and contribution to climate change are serious social problems. The key to improving a transportation system’s efficiency and addressing its social costs is a proper balance of competition and innovation provided by the private sector and efficient regulations and infrastructure policies implemented by the government.

On Tuesday, September 12, at 11:00 am, via Webex, we are very fortunate to have Dr. Clifford Winston to present to us his views and perspectives on the matter in the context of the US Transportation System, as laid out in his forthcoming Brookings Institution Press book (produced with his colleague Dr. Jia Yan and associates) Revitalizing a Nation: Competition and Innovation in the US Transportation System. Since 1986, Dr. Winston has been a senior fellow in the Economic Studies program at the Brookings Institution. His research focuses on microeconomic policy and its impact on government performance, specializing in industrial organization, regulation, and transportation. From 1987 to 1998, Winston was co-editor of the Brookings Papers on Economic Activity: Microeconomics, which publishes innovative analyses on real-word institutions and economic policy with an empirical focus and a pragmatic aim. Prior to joining Brookings, Dr. Winston was an associate professor in the Transportation Systems Division of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Department of Civil Engineering, teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels courses such as Advanced Travel Demand Analysis, Applied Econometrics, Public Policy Toward Industry, and Transportation Economics. He also lectured on microeconomic policies at Australian National University and served as a visiting professor at the Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po), where he taught competition policy. He is the author of a long list of books and articles. Dr. Winston received his A.B. in economics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1974, his MSc from the London School of Economics in 1975, and his Ph.D. in economics from U.C. Berkeley in 1979.
