On the occasion of the International Women’s Month, the Gender and Development Thematic Group of the 1818 Society cordially invites you to a discussion of a recently launched book by a former colleague, Nisha Agrawal, titled: “Her Right to Equality, From Promise to Power” In this book, Nisha discusses why progress on gender equality has been so slow in so many areas and what needs to be done to accelerate progress. We are equally pleased that another colleague, Isabelle Guerrero, has agreed to be the commentator.

Speaker: Nisha Agrawal is an economist who has worked on poverty, inequality and social development issues for more than 30 years. She was the first CEO of Oxfam India for 10 years from 2008-2018. During this period, she focused Oxfam’s work on the most lagging states and the most marginalized groups. Prior to that, Nisha worked with the World Bank for almost 20 years. She has extensive experience working in countries in the East Asia Region (especially Cambodia, Vietnam and Indonesia) and in the East Africa Region (Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda). Prior to that, for four years, Nisha was a Research Associate at the Impact Research Centre at Melbourne University in Australia. Nisha has a Ph.D in Economics from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, and an M.A. in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics. Currently, Nisha is an active member of civil society networks and organizations promoting social justice, with a special interest in promoting gender equality.

Commentator: Isabel Guerrero is a former VP for South Asia between 2008 and 2013. Before that she was a Country Director for Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, India, Mexico, Peru, and Paraguay. She has spent the last six years building IMAGOGG, a nonprofit that works with grassroots, social entrepreneurs, and governments around the world to scale up innovations from the Base of the Pyramid. Since 2014, she also teaches “Scaling up for Development Impact” at Harvard Kennedy School, the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs, the Bernard Van Leer Foundation. From 2014 to 2017 she was a Senior Lecturer on leadership at MIT Sloan School. Isabel received her MSc in Economics from the London School of Economics and trained as a psychoanalyst at the Washington Psychoanalytic Institute and the Peruvian Psychoanalytic Society. Isabel sits on the Board of the UN University and is a frequent guest at CNN Dinero and is part of the UN High Level Panel on Digital Cooperation.

Moderator: Ajay Chhibber is Distinguished Visiting Scholar, Institute for International Economic Policy, Elliott School of International Affairs, George Washington University. He was earlier the first Director General (Minister of State) , Independent Evaluation Office, Government of India and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), India – affiliated institute of the Ministry of Finance. He held senior positions at the UN as Assistant Secretary General and Assistant Administrator, UNDP. At the World Bank he served as Country Director in Turkey and Vietnam. He was also Director of the 1997 World Development Report on the Role of the State. He has a Ph. D from Stanford University, a MA from the Delhi School of Economics. He also has attended advanced management programs at the Harvard Business School, Harvard University and INSEAD, France. He taught at Georgetown University and at the University of Delhi. He has published widely including 5 books in development economics and is a contributor (columnist) to several newspapers.

Host: Nadereh Chamlou is the co-chair of the 1818 Society’s Gender and Development Thematic Group. She is a former Senior Advisor at the Word Bank and a current nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council. She serves as board member of several NGOs focusing on gender equality, entrepreneurship and innovation . She is the recipient of The International Alliance for Women’s 2015 “Making a Difference” global award.
