Event Navigation

A presentation by the 1818  Society Agriculture and Rural Development Thematic Group

Presenter: Dr. Keshav Kranthi

Moderator: Kevin Cleaver

Dr. Kranthi is currently head of the Technical Division of International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), Washington DC. He was previously the Director of India’s Central Institute of Cotton Research (CICR). His presentation will focus on the long-term impacts of Bt Cotton in India. There has been an almost a total switch to Bt Cotton in India. Cotton productivity has increased significantly. However, Dr. Kranthi’s research shows that adopting Bt crops is not a silver bullet, especially when it comes to reducing the cost of pesticides. There are many other issues concerning the performance of Bt Cotton in India such as low yields, yield stagnation, high fertilizer use, degraded soils, Bt-resistant pink bollworms, white flies, leaf curl virus, among others. The presentation will discuss strategies to deal with these issues.

You can read Dr Kranthi’s article here.
