A presentation by the 1818 Society Agriculture and Rural Development Thematic Group

The current global food system is transforming at a pace never seen before. Some novel products like plant-based meat are already in the market while others, like cell-cultured meat, are making fast progress. Efforts to produce food through vertical farming, microbial fermentation, and ocean farming are also underway. The Agriculture and Rural Development Thematic team of the 1818 Society will sponsor a presentation on this subject by former World Bank Colleague, Jitendra Srivastava in collaboration with Shannon Theobald, a well-known alternate protein strategist. They will explore key drivers shaping the future of food, how these rapidly evolving technologies are poised to make a significant impact on the food industry towards meeting changing consumer requirements. They will also bring up the need to bridge the gap between startups, corporations,, international development organizations, governments, and consumers in creating a sustainable food system using novel technologies.

Speakers:

  • Jitendra Srivastava, was Lead agriculturist in the Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development Unit , Europe and Central Asia region and earlier worked at the Central unit. He was a wheat Breeder and Professor in India and is a well-recognized contributor to India’s Green Revolution. He also worked with Rockefeller Foundation, Ford Foundation and CGIAR system before joining the World Bank and is bestowed with several awards and recognitions. He continues to be involved with the Bank, Think Tanks and Land Grant universities and takes interest in following new developments in the food sector.
  • Shannon Theobald is an innovation and marketing strategist specializing in alternative protein market expansion, product development, and eCommerce. She is the author of the category bestseller, Printing Your Dinner: Personalization in the Future of Food, and host of international podcast, Big Food Big Future. Shannon works with organizations interested in investing in alternate protein, advises startups as a board member, and also works on large-scale strategic projects with The Kroger Co.
