The relief drives run from September 18 to October 2, 2023.
On September 8th an earthquake struck the high Atlas Mountains in Morocco with a magnitude of 6.8, resulting in devastating loss of life, injuries, and thousands of damaged and destroyed homes. Hilltop villages were reduced to heaps of rubble. As of September 14, the death toll surpassed 3,000 people with over 18,000 families affected.
Two days later Storm Daniel hit eastern Libya dumping one meter of rainfall in a single day—two to three times more than the region sees in a year. In the port city of Derna, two dams burst and more than 10% of the city’s population have drowned. As of September 17, the reported death toll reached 11,300 confirmed fatalities, with still thousands unaccounted for. According to the UN, over 38,000 people have been displaced and approximately 800,000 men, women, and children are in desperate need of humanitarian assistance.
How You Can Help:
For the Libya floods relief drive, the sponsors selected two international NGOs to receive donations: International Medical Corps is working in the region to deliver essential medicines and medical supplies to overstressed health facilities, as well as working to deploy additional medical personnel to address skyrocketing health needs. Islamic Relief is working with local partners to provide emergency relief including food, basic emergency shelter, and essential household items.
For the Morocco relief drive, the sponsors selected CARE International, whose relief efforts on the ground are being conducted in Al Haouz and other affected regions. CARE is coordinating and working closely with local Moroccan NGOs in support of their response efforts, which are focused not only on immediate needs but also in provision of food, health, shelter and much more.
