New Cultural Event

Join us for a Japanese tea ceremony and experience tranquility and enjoy Japanese Matcha tea and sweets. This event provides an opportunity for 1818 society members, spouses and friends to familiarize themselves with Japanese tea culture (Chanoyu), forms, and manners in a relaxed atmosphere. Kanako Yamashita, a Bank retiree and Professor of Omotesenke school of tea ceremony, will present an overview of Chanoyu tradition which extends over five centuries and its evolution up to now, followed by Q&A. Then, Kanako and Omotesenke Domonkai members will perform tea ceremony, using a Ryurei table and chairs, in an adjacent room. All the participants will have an opportunity to enjoy a bowl of Matcha tea and Japanese sweets.

A fee of $20 per person will be payable on the day of the event. You can pay in cash or by Venmo.

Kanako Yamashita became a certified teacher of Omotesenke school of tea ceremony in 1986 and taught in Washington DC and Maryland. She also served as the Omotesenke Domonkai Washington DC District Representative for 9 years.  She has organized Chanoyu demonstrations at Embassy of Japan, Freer Gallery of Art, National Press Club etc. in Washington DC as well as in other countries.
