Energy Thematic Group event
The pursuit of nuclear fusion on earth has been, until recently, led largely by government-funded universities and laboratories. Recognizing the importance of Commercially Viable Fusion (CVF) for an energy-starved and growing world population, private capital is now showing growing interest. As private sector interest grows, the tendency is to think that the “problem” has been reduced to a technical one, requiring only engineering solutions. While the eventual goals can be societal and commercial, the route to getting there will be led by science. After briefly reviewing the story of energy, the presentation will focus on why fusion is so difficult. It will then explore the current fusion landscape and suggest optimum pathways to fusion power.
Presenter: Dr. Swadesh M Mahajan, a research professor in the Physics Department at the University of Texas who has published extensively. He worked earlier at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy, as well as in India. Dr. Mahajan is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and World Academy of Sciences.
