Brazil Floods: You Can Help!

This relief drive will run for 10 business days, from May 16 – May 30, 2024

The World Bank Group is launching a relief drive benefiting Brazil’s southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, following the recent devastating floods in the area. The region has been struck by the worst flooding in 80 years, resulting in catastrophic consequences for its residents. As of the launch of the drive, the disaster has led to:

149 confirmed deaths
108 people still missing
806 injuries
538,245 displaced individuals
Over 2 million (2,131,968) people affected across 449 municipalities

The relentless rains have caused widespread destruction, submerging homes, roads, schools, hospitals, and critical infrastructure. Many areas, including the state capital, Porto Alegre, are struggling with power outages, lack of clean water, and disrupted communication lines.

In response, the Brazilian government together with local authorities have mobilized extensive resources and emergency personnel, to aid in rescue and relief operations. The World Bank is already engaging with the country to support the emergency, the recovery and reconstruction. However, the scale of this disaster necessitates additional support from the international community.

We are launching a campaign to provide immediate assistance to the affected communities via UNICEF. UNICEF’s team is in the field working to evaluate the flooding situation, provide technical assistance, and distribute hygiene kits, and is coordinating its efforts with the Federal and Local Government.

Your generosity and prompt action can make a significant difference in the lives of those suffering from this unprecedented disaster.
