Afghanistan Flash Flood Disaster Relief Drive: You Can Help!

This relief drive will run for 10 business days, from May 22 – June 5, 2024

On May 10, flash floods caused by heavy and unprecedented rainfall devastated and destroyed villages in the northern Baghlan province of Afghanistan, claiming the lives of more than 300 people and injuring over 1,600. However, unofficial records indicate the death toll may be higher than 400. More than 2,600 homes have been damaged or destroyed. Reports indicate that approximately 600,000 individuals, half of whom are children, reside in the five districts of Baghlan severely affected by the floods. The United Nations has issued a warning that hundreds of people may still be trapped beneath debris and mud. Additionally, the provinces of Badakhshan, Ghor, and western Herat have also suffered significant damage due to recent floods.

Afghanistan is currently grappling with one of the world’s most severe food crises, and thousands of individuals in the affected areas are already experiencing extreme hunger. Medical assistance is scarce, and the country’s health system is ill-equipped to handle a crisis of this magnitude, lacking the necessary resources to provide adequate care.

Reports indicate a critical shortage of drinking water, food, and essential shelters, with the looming threat of waterborne disease outbreaks. Residents urgently require essential household and medical supplies, as well as access to clean water and food. Your support is critical in providing essential aid to the most vulnerable among us.

How you can help:

For this relief effort, the disaster relief drive sponsors have selected Islamic Relief, which has launched an emergency response. Their organization’s efforts are concentrated on providing essential aid such as food packages, tents, clean drinking water, and basic healthcare services. Their response will prioritize assistance to families who have lost their homes, individuals with disabilities, and orphaned children.
