Agriculture, Food and Rural Development Thematic Group event

Brief Summary of Session: Martien van Nieuwkoop, recently appointed Director, Agriculture Development, Gates Foundation, will share his perspectives on the state of the agri-food sector and the World Bank’s efforts to address the key imperatives, with reflections on the evolving polycrises comprising the COVID aftermath, climate change and conflicts affecting various dimensions of vital supply chains. He will then share his vision for the sector and how he intends to shape the important agenda at the Gates Foundation, leading the Agriculture Development Program to work with farmers, governments, and other partners, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia toward a sustainable, inclusive and resilient agricultural transformation.

Three eminent discussants, Kevin Cleaver, Consultant, Holger Kray, and Diego Arias, Practice Managers, Agriculture & Food Practice, World Bank, will enrich the session with brief thought-provoking remarks, alternative perspectives and select call-out questions to engage in a deeper exploration of the topics.
