Trip Classification: Strenuous
Trip Description: The German-speaking chapter is organizing a hiking trip for the 1818 Hiking Club in Austria immediately after their annual reunion in Vienna, Austria.
The hike is being planned from Sept. 9-16 in Austria. The hiking trip will start and end in Vienna. The trip will consist of day hikes from two separate locations – Bad Aussee and Ramsau. There will be transport from Vienna to the following two locations from which we will do the hikes. At each location we will leave our luggage in the hotel and do three day hikes, returning to the hotel every evening.
(1) Bad Aussee: Jufa Hotel, Jugendherbergsstrasse 148
From there, we intend to hike in 3 areas:

(a)
Trisselwand: Enjoy the breathtaking view over the Altausseer See
(b) Loser: Beautiful mountain landscapes … on the other side of Altausseer See
(c) Bad Ischl: Alpine meadows … where Empress Sisi hiked before … to the 2024 Cultural capital of Europe … and where the royal family had their summer residence.
(2) Ramsau: Hotel Ramsau, Ramsau 192
From there, we will do 3 hikes:
(a) Dachstein: Take the cable car up to the highest mountain of Styria (almost 3000 m), hike along the glacier and perhaps try out the “Stairway to Nothingness” for a special thrill … and wonderful views.
(b) Alpine meadows trail: Enjoy the beauty of the alpine meadows of Austria … where cows and sheep graze during the summertime.
(c) Murmeltier (marmot) trail: Take pleasure in walking through beautiful alpine meadows … and who knows, we might get to see some marmots!
All hikes will be accompanied by professional guides and require some hiking experience in the mountains. Hike participants will be expected to bring proper equipment (e.g., hiking boots, rain gear, backpack for the day hikes, hiking poles, etc.). The detailed program is subject to change, given that the weather or other conditions may make such changes necessary.
The six hiking days will be preceded by an easy “city hike” on September 8 in Vienna, that is part of the Vienna-reunion of the 1818 Chapter for Germany-Austria-Switzerland, followed by a visit to the “Heurigen” (wine tavern). Hikers who are not participating in the German chapter reunion are nonetheless invited to join the “city hike” on September 8, as it will help you get over any jet lag and help you prepare for the more strenuous hiking during the following week.
