India Club invites you to the presentation of a graphic novel “The People of the Indus” published by Penguin. Author calls it “Pop-History” a new and interesting way of presenting history.
‘The People of the Indus” is a non-fiction graphic novel that tells the history of the Indus Civilization, one of the first civilizations of the world. This is the same time period when the Pyramids were being built in Egypt, and the ziggurats in Mesopotamia, and the world was witnessing the rise of its first cities. The Indus Civilization, in marked contrast to Egypt and Mesopotamia, built no pyramids or ziggurats, no temples or palaces. It had no kings and no warfare either, and yet was a materially rich, sophisticated, literate and technologically advanced society.
How did this civilization come about? What was it like over there? If there were no kings, how was society organized? And if the people were not building pyramids here, what were they doing instead?
Written and illustrated with the help of a leading Indus archaeologist, this graphic novel tells the story of one of the most enigmatic civilizations of the ancient Bronze Age world. A narrator takes you around the present-day ruins of the civilization’s major cities—like Mohenjo Daro, Harappa and Lothal—and explores what life in these cities may have been like 4500 years ago. Along the way, we meet some of the people that lived here, explore the role of writing, and uncover how changing climatic conditions may have led to the civilization’s decline and eventual transformation. ‘People of the Indus’ is the intriguing story of the birth of civilization in South Asia.”
