Speaker: Edward Luce, Chief US Commentator, Financial Times

Synopsis: In his insightful and harrowing new book, The Retreat of Western Liberalism, Edward Luce issues a chilling warning: “Western liberal democracy is not yet dead, but it is far closer to collapse than we may wish to believe. It is facing its gravest challenge since the Second World War”. Western democracies, he suggests, face a long-term crisis of governance caused by cratering trust, gridlock and ideological polarization. America’s system, in particular, which was designed for cross-party cooperation, cannot function as it should in such a vitriolic climate. Rather than throw our hands up and declare all is lost, Luce argues that America’s elites should take ownership for what has gone wrong and take steps to set the US back on the right path that builds greater not less international cooperation. The United States, Luce suggests, should once again exercise leadership that draws not only on the traditional allies but other emerging powers.
