Citizen and Stakeholder Engagement in World Bank operations: Closing the Gap Between Promise and Reality

A panel discussion on results and future directions of the World Bank’s citizen and engagement strategies introduced in 2014 and 2016 respectively. The progress in implementing the citizen engagement strategy was recently evaluated by the Independent Evaluation Group of the Bank.

Mr. Anis Dani, convener of the Social and Environment Thematic Group will introduce the subject.

Ms. Elena Bardasi, Team Leader of the IEG evaluation of citizen engagement strategy will present the main findings and recommendations of the evaluation report (report is accessible at https://ieg.worldbankgroup.org/evaluations/engaging-citizens-better-development-results).

Mr. Vinay Bhargava, Chief Technical Adviser, PTF will share his observations based on review of citizen engagement implementation in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal and why and how the World Bank should step up its efforts to fulfill the transformative potential of these strategies.

Ms. Saki Kumagai, Governance Specialist, Governance Global Practice, The World Bank will share her perspectives from years of working on citizen engagement on the front lines of operations.
