Chris Ian Brett, Lead, Agribusiness Specialist, GFAGE, co-Author of the report on “The Future of Food: MFD in Agricultural Value Chains”.
Discussant: Rory O’Sullivan, 1818 Society Member and International Consultant.
Background: The Agriculture GP led the production of the most recent iteration of its “Future of Food” series of studies–with a focus on the application of the World Bank’s MFD to agriculture and the food value chain. The report was presented with great interest at the 2018 Spring Meetings of the IMF and World Bank Group and internalized in Bank operations at the recent Agriculture Forum of the AgGP. We are fortunate to have one of the lead authors of the report to present the report. The presentation will highlight financing gaps, identify a range of potential funding sources, and suggest possible actions to help crowd-in more private investment, while optimizing the use of public resources.
The recommended actions are aligned with the aim to address the market failures that lead to inadequate levels of privately provided goods and services to achieve global development goals. Implementation of MFD in agricultural value chains will require an approach to diagnostics that is more oriented to the private sector, as well as structured, inclusive public-private dialogue to help inform the design of a robust reform and investment program. This presentation is co-organized with the Agriculture and Rural Development Thematic Group of the 1818 Society, the network of active World Bank retirees. It will be accessible through webex and ample opportunity will be available for Q&As and interventions from attendees–both in person and remotely.
